From being one of the earliest members of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Vajpayee blossomed into a leading opposition MP by the late 1960s, went on to become External Affairs Minister in the short-lived Janata government and, finally in 1999, to head the first non-Congress government to complete a full term in office. That it was a coalition government made the feat all the more remarkable, and testifies to the fact that though wedded to a right-wing political ideology, Vajpayee did not believe in the politics of exclusion.

Autobiography of a Yogi is the story of the life of Paramahansa Yogananda (January 5, 1893–March 7, 1952) first published in 1946. Born as Mukunda Lal Ghosh in Gorakhpur, India, into a Bengali family, this book takes the reader on a journey into the life of Paramahansa Yogananda and his encounters with spiritual figures of both the East and West. Beginning from his childhood, his family life, to finding his guru and becoming a monk and establishing his teachings of Kriya Yoga meditation, this book allows the reader to see the spiritual yearning of the man and how he realizes that over the years. It draws on both his personal experiences—anecdotes and meetings with eminent spiritual personalities, his association with nineteenth-century master Lahiri Mahasaya who had prophesied the writing of this book—as well as how he travels across America lecturing and establishing his teachings in Los Angeles, California

Gandhi, an inspiration and a despair to all who approached him, has been subjected to MORE analysis than any other person in contemporary history. And yet something is missing in the puzzle that Gandhi was and is. This volume is one more attempt to understand and to explain him by laying a little more emphasis on the societal factors and the situations that shaped him and structured his personality during his formative years in England and South Africa. This by no means is an easy task. Gandhi was a complex personality. Moreover, as a continuously evolving phenomenon, he underwent several startling changes in his habits, views, and approaches to life. He therefore cannot be evaluated out of the time frame that was in existence at the time we talk about. Also, Gandhi has suffered a lot by the process of deification that started with his death or even before it. Much that is written about him is sheer hagiography with a few pieces of demonology too. Gandhi is too valuable a piece of humanity to be lost to history. We must strive to brush off the cobwebs gathering around him and portray him as the simple yet stupendous figure he was.

An unpredictable music composer who defied the conventions of his time, a trendsetter who introduced a fusion of Western rock and jazz with Indian classical music—R.D. Burman’s life and career make him one of the most important and versatile artists to dominate the Indian film music scene from the 1960s to the ’80s. Whether the film itself was a blockbuster or a flop, his music always stood out—from the peppy ‘Dum maro dum’ and the evergreen ‘Chand mera dil’ to the soulful ‘Tum aa gaye ho, nur aa gaya hai’ and ‘Tujhse naraz nahin zindagi’. It is said that some films became hits on the strength of his songs alone! But while he was hailed as the reigning prince by all when he created one chartbuster after another, towards the end of his career he was labelled ‘luckless’ and subjected to indignities when his films started failing.

India's fight for freedom began within two decades of her crushing defeat in the Mutiny of 1857, also called India's First War of Independence. In his great pride of a conqueror, Lord Lawrence Humiliatingly asked the Indians: 'Will you be governed by the pen or the sword?' The British, nevertheless could not crush their spirit. It lay dormant over the next two decades, but re-emerged first in 1875 with Bankim Chandra Chatterji's immortal national hymn Bande Mataram. The second was in 1876 with Surendranath Banerjea emerging as Father of Political Consciousness. Finally, it was Gandhi as the Father of Mass Awakening. India's fight for freedom changed its ideology as time permitted: first with the Moderates, followed by the Extremists. At the end came Gandhi to turn the fight into a mass struggle, which continued till India emerged as a free nation in 1947. Outside these three groups were Independents of equal eminence who contributed to India's freedom struggle in their ways. Additionally, as Great Indians, the author has included Jamsetji Tata. He was a pioneer in hydropower generation and steel manufacture, besides other contributions, especially in sciences and education, which changed the face of Indian economy.
